What This Looks Like in a Classroom

Bukola Fapohunda

A neurodivergent learning specialist used our color-coded mnemonic strategies to teach students the parts and functions of a tree.

Tree of Colors & Memory

Bukola applied our color-coded mnemonic strategies to teach the parts and functions of a tree. Here’s what happened:

  • Linking: Roots = hungry baby, trunk = strong dad, branches = mom’s arms, leaves = children catching sunlight.

  • Peg: Feet = roots, torso = trunk, arms = branches, hair = leaves.

  • Musical Cues: Sung to a familiar song.

  • Keywords: “Straws” = roots, “Plates” = leaves.

  • Chunking: Grouped by function.

  • Loci: Door = roots, whiteboard = trunk, chairs = branches, fan = leaves.

  • Connections: Compared the tree to the school.

  • Letters & Words: Acronym RTBL (Ruby’s Tree Brings Life).

“These strategies didn’t just enhance memory — they made the lesson multi-sensory, engaging, and unforgettable.” Read more.
